NAVY HOSTING BOXING FINALS

In one of the great traditions at the Naval Academy, the 60th Brigade Boxing Championships will be held tonight at Halsey Field House.  The competition, open to all members of the brigade, features several members of Navy’s intercollegiate team, coached by Jim McNally.

 

The boxing in 10 weight classes gets under way at 7 PM.  Tonight’s bouts are the culmination of an elimination tournament filled with tradition and excitement.  The first bout of the evening pits Texan T. Alford of Houston against Brian Hawkins of Coppell in the 125 pound division.

 

In the 132 pound contest, senior Arthur Ball of St. Louis will square off against freshman Adam Mallo of Chicago.  Phoenix resident Steve Cobos will face Mike Reel of Algona, Iowa in the 139 pound competition.  Nick Sidiropoulos of Perry Hall, the lone Marylander in the finals, will fight at 147 pounds against Bobby Villanueva.

 

Washington’s Agur Adams will go against Rick Weil of Huntington Beach, CA in the 156 pound bout.  Another East Coast – West Coast matchup will have 165 pounders freshman Tommy Clarke of Coventry, RI meeting senior Dustin Lonero of San Jose, CA.  The 175 pound bout sends Ben Zuber of Cherry Hill, NJ against Anthony Triviso of Fairmont, West Virginia.  Chris Kennedy of Seattle engages 185 pound foe A.J. Washington of Woodstown, NJ. 

 

Andy Haffele of Monroe, Wisconsin will fight at 195 pounds against Javaris Turner of Pensacola, FL.  And in the heavyweight contest Jeff Wtakins of Bronz, NY will battle with Pat McCauley of Dallas.

 

Assistant coaches Jim Searing and Earl Checkley will work the corners throughout the evening.
