Brigade Champions - From Spike Webb in the early 1950's................
After we ceased intercollegiate competition in 1941, we began having the Brigade Boxing Tournament with annual champions being crowned in each weight division. In 1949 after Mr. Anthony J. Rubino came here as Assistant Boxing Coach that the practice of inscribing the names of the champions on plaques in Macdonough Hall was started again. It had been discontinued when we dropped the intercollegiate boxing from the curriculum(1942 - 1948)
I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the midshipmen who I have known through boxing. They have been colorful, talented men dedicated to the greatest sport in the world. The champions have been true champions, and the losers have given their best to a sport that attracts only the rugged of my generation.
At the time of this writing(1958) the Brigade Boxers are training for this season's tournament, which promises to the best in many a year. We have more men out for the Brigades this year than I've ever seen, and their ability is quite outstanding. I have the honor of being their manager.
